The capital of the South Jutland marshlands - now a part of the new National Park Wadden Sea - is called Toender. The town had its first hanseatic municipal law already in 1243 and it is thus the oldest market town in Denmark. Originally the town had its own harbour and direct access to the sea. When the dikes were built west of the town in the 1550s this connection was closed. In return the town and its guests may delight in the many beautiful and well-preserved gable houses from the 1600s and 1700s - a period when the town flourished because of the extensive lace industry.
